The novel follows Dr. Pawel Bronski, a Jewish physician stripped of his position as dean of the medical faculty in 1939, as he struggles to suppress his identity in order to survive. His wife and two children share his fate, along with his brother-in-law, Captain Androfski, the only Jewish officer in an elite Polish cavalry regiment, and Alexander Brandel, a teacher and secretary of a Zionist organization whose diary entries frame much of the story.

Through these intertwined destinies, the author vividly depicts the invasion of Poland, the formation of the Warsaw Ghetto, and the heroic 1943 uprising, a defiant stand of courage and human dignity against overwhelming odds. A gripping portrait of resistance and survival in humanity’s darkest hour.
