JCC Film Club: The Stronghold

There are films about war, and there are films that try to understand what happens to the people caught in the middle of it.

“The Stronghold” takes us back to one of the most difficult moments of the Yom Kippur War. However, the battle is not at the heart of the film. Instead, we are drawn into the lives of the people - young soldiers, a commander and a reserve doctor, each trying to figure out what the right thing to do is as the world begins to close around them. Based on true events, this intimate and deeply human story offers us a different way of looking at war - close, complex and not always comfortable.

Michael Aloni brings a strong human presence to the film as a doctor whose first instinct is to save lives. “The Stronghold” is a quiet yet gripping film that raises questions about courage, fear, responsibility and what we owe to one another. Perhaps now, more than ever, watching this film takes on an added meaning: it invites us to pause, look beyond the larger story and see the people inside it - and think again about the choices we make in our most difficult moments.
