About the event

Lecture on the Bar with Ariel Reichard - Israel in the Global Arena: Between Security Reality and International Perception

Why do large parts of the world perceive Israel's response to the events of October 7 so differently from that of Israelis – and what does this gap mean? Has Israel become safer or less safe since October 7? How is Israel perceived by people outside the country? Why do accusations of genocide resonate so widely around the world – is it just anti-Semitism, or does Israel also have the ability to influence how it is perceived?

This talk explores these questions through a discussion of Israel's changing strategic landscape: from shifting threat perceptions and deterrence challenges, to the widening gap between how Israelis understand their actions and how they are interpreted outside the country. Based on conversations and perspectives from European and American students studying in the Czech Republic, the lecture offers a glimpse into how Israel is understood – and often misunderstood – outside its borders, and what this might mean for its future. Join us for a timely conversation about security, legitimacy, and Israel’s changing place in the world.

Ariel Reichard is a lecturer in international relations at Charles University in Prague. He teaches courses on conflict and war and Middle East politics, both at Charles University and at two other universities in the Czech Republic. This lecture draws on his research experience in Israeli security policy and his work with international students studying Israel.
